What is retrieval?

The mechanism behind any system that answers from your documents rather than from general knowledge. When answers come back vague on topics your documents cover well, the problem is nearly always here rather than in the model: the right passage was not found, or was buried among irrelevant ones. It is worth checking what was actually retrieved for a bad answer before changing anything else, because that single step resolves most cases.
