What is schema markup?

Machine-readable labels added to a page describing what it represents: a business, a service, an article, a set of questions and answers. It does not directly make you rank higher. What it does is make you eligible for richer results and make it easier for a search engine, and increasingly an AI assistant, to state what you do without inferring it. Getting it wrong or claiming things the page does not contain is worse than omitting it.
