What is business intelligence?

The practice of collecting data from across a business and reporting on it so decisions are made on numbers rather than on the loudest opinion. For a small business the obstacle is almost never the analysis, it is that the data lives in four systems that disagree about what a customer is. That reconciliation is most of the work, and it is worth doing even if the eventual report is simple.
