What is a system of record?

Every business with more than two systems eventually has the same customer in several of them with different details. Naming a system of record per data type settles in advance which one wins, which is the question that otherwise gets argued about during an incident. It is a decision rather than a technical property: the CRM might own contact details while the accounting system owns billing, and both can be right as long as it is written down.
